We're Here To Help!

Exposure Therapy is an evidence-based treatment designed to help adolescents gradually and safely face fears, anxieties, and avoidance behaviors that interfere with daily life. Rather than avoiding distressing thoughts, situations, or sensations, teens are supported in approaching them in a controlled, structured way allowing the brain and nervous system to learn that these experiences are manageable and not dangerous.
At Portum Behavioral Health in Annandale, NJ, Exposure Therapy is delivered within a trauma-informed framework, ensuring that treatment is paced appropriately, collaborative, and grounded in emotional safety. Exposure is never forced. Instead, it is carefully planned and guided by licensed clinicians who help teens build confidence, resilience, and long-term coping skills.
Avoidance often provides short-term relief but can make Anxiety stronger over time. Teens may begin avoiding school, social situations, specific places, or even internal experiences like emotions or bodily sensations. Exposure Therapy helps break this cycle by teaching adolescents that discomfort can be tolerated and does not need to control their lives.
✓ Reduce anxiety and fear responses over time
✓ Increase confidence in handling challenging situations
✓ Decrease avoidance and safety behaviors
✓ Build independence and emotional resilience
✓ Regain participation in school, relationships, and daily activities
At Portum, Exposure Therapy is always trauma-informed. This means clinicians carefully consider each teen’s history, emotional readiness, and nervous system response before introducing exposure work.

• Prioritizes safety, consent, and collaboration
• Builds coping and regulation skills before exposure begins
• Uses gradual, step-by-step exposure plans
• Avoids overwhelming or retraumatizing experiences
• Reinforces empowerment rather than fear
At Portum Behavioral Health in Annandale, NJ, this approach allows adolescents to feel supported and in control throughout the process, which is essential for meaningful and lasting progress. Teens learn how fear and Anxiety function in the brain and body. Clinicians help them understand that anxiety is a natural response designed to protect us, but that it can become overactive and disruptive. By learning how anxiety rises, peaks, and eventually falls on its own, adolescents begin to view fear as uncomfortable but not dangerous. This knowledge alone often reduces fear’s intensity and power.
Exposure Therapy teaches teens that change happens through gradual, supported steps, not sudden or forced confrontation. Together with their therapist, teens create a personalized exposure plan that begins with manageable challenges and builds over time. Each success reinforces confidence and helps retrain the brain to respond differently to previously feared situations.
Avoidance may bring short-term relief, but it strengthens anxiety in the long run. Teens learn how avoiding situations, places, or emotions keeps fear in control of their lives. Exposure Therapy helps adolescents gently interrupt this cycle, replacing avoidance with approach behaviors that expand their sense of freedom, independence, and capability.
A key skill teens develop is the ability to tolerate discomfort without escaping or shutting down. Exposure Therapy helps adolescents learn that uncomfortable sensations such as nervousness, racing thoughts, or physical tension are temporary and survivable. This skill is especially important for teens who rely on avoidance, emotional withdrawal, or unhealthy coping behaviors to manage distress.
Before and during exposure work, teens are taught coping strategies to help regulate emotions and remain grounded. These skills may include breathing techniques, mindfulness, self-soothing practices, and cognitive strategies. Over time, teens learn they can rely on their own skills rather than avoidance or reassurance from others.
As teens successfully face fears, they begin to trust themselves more. Each exposure experience reinforces the belief that they can handle difficult situations and emotions. This increased self-efficacy often leads to improvements in school attendance, social engagement, family relationships, and overall quality of life.
Together, these skills learned in Exposure Therapy help adolescents:
• Reduce Anxiety and fear-based behaviors
• Re-engage in activities they’ve been avoiding
• Improve confidence and independence
• Strengthen emotional resilience
• Develop long-term coping strategies they can use into adulthood
At Portum Behavioral Health in Annandale,NJ, Exposure Therapy skills are taught within a trauma-informed framework that prioritizes safety, collaboration, and emotional readiness ensuring teens feel supported as they build skills that last.
