We're Here To Help!

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is an evidence-based, trauma-informed therapy that helps adolescents safely process distressing memories, reduce the intensity of painful emotions, and develop healthier beliefs about themselves and the world.
Unlike traditional talk therapy alone, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation such as guided eye movement, taps, or tones to support the brain’s natural healing processes, helping memories become less emotionally overwhelming.
At Portum Behavioral Health in Annandale, NJ, EMDR is delivered within a trauma-informed framework that emphasizes safety, pacing, and emotional readiness. EMDR is not simply “reliving” events; it’s a structured, supportive process that allows teens to reprocess distressing experiences without becoming retraumatized.
Adolescents who have experienced overwhelming or distressing events such as loss, violence, accidents, bullying, or chronic stress often carry emotional and physical responses long after the event has passed.

At Portum Behavioral Health in Annandale, NJ, this approach ensures that EMDR supports healing without retraumatization and that teens feel empowered and supported throughout the process. Let us help your loved one process their experiences and explore their emotions in a safe space, Call Us Today!
EMDR begins with getting to know your teen, not just their symptoms, but their story, strengths, and coping style. The therapist takes time to understand what your teen has been through, how those experiences are affecting them today, and what feels safest to address first. This phase helps build trust and ensures treatment is tailored to your teen’s emotional readiness.
Before any trauma processing begins, teens learn practical skills to help them stay grounded and emotionally regulated. These may include breathing techniques, visualization, mindfulness, and other calming strategies. This preparation phase is essential as it helps teens feel confident in their ability to manage emotions and reinforces that they are always in control of the process.
Together with the therapist, teens gently identify specific memories, thoughts, emotions, or body sensations that feel “stuck” or continue to cause distress. This is done carefully and respectfully, without pressure to share details aloud. The goal is simply to notice what experiences are still impacting the present.
During reprocessing, the therapist uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or tones) to help the brain process distressing memories in a new way. Teens are not required to relive events or talk extensively about them. Instead, the brain is guided to naturally reduce the emotional intensity attached to the memory, allowing it to be stored in a healthier, less distressing way.
As reprocessing continues, teens often notice that memories feel less intense, less overwhelming, or more distant. Physical reactions such as tightness, nausea, or panic may decrease as the nervous system settles. This phase helps teens feel more emotionally balanced and less triggered by reminders of the past.
EMDR also helps teens replace negative beliefs formed through trauma — such as “I’m not safe,” “It was my fault,” or “I can’t handle this” with more adaptive, empowering beliefs like “I’m safe now,” “I did the best I could,” or “I’m capable.” These shifts support improved self-esteem, confidence, and emotional stability.
Every EMDR session ends with grounding and stabilization. Therapists ensure your teen feels calm, safe, and regulated before leaving session. Teens are never sent home feeling overwhelmed, and coping skills are reinforced so they feel supported between sessions.
Progress is reviewed regularly to ensure symptoms continue to improve and that your teen feels supported. EMDR is integrated with other therapeutic approaches as needed, allowing healing to unfold gradually and sustainably.
By addressing distressing experiences at the neurological level rather than relying solely on talk therapy, EMDR helps teens heal emotional wounds that may feel hard to explain or “get past.” At Portum, this process is always guided by trauma-informed principles that prioritize choice, safety, trust, and empowerment.
At Portum Behavioral Health in Annandale,NJ, EMDR Therapy skills are taught within a trauma-informed framework that prioritizes safety, collaboration, and emotional readiness ensuring teens feel supported as they build skills that last.
