We're Here To Help!

Psychodrama Therapy is an experiential, action-based therapeutic modality that uses guided role-play, improvisation, and dramatic enactment to help adolescents explore emotions, relationships, and life experiences in a safe therapeutic environment. Rather than relying solely on talk, Psychodrama invites teens to express, re-experience, and re-frame their internal world through action, role reversal, symbolic enactment, and group participation.
At Portum Behavioral Health in Annandale, NJ, Psychodrama is presented within a trauma-informed framework that encourages emotional safety, empowerment, and self-discovery by helping teens connect thought, emotion, and behavior in meaningful ways.
Adolescence is a time of identity formation, intense emotions, and evolving social relationships. Many teens struggle to articulate complex feelings or make sense of inner conflicts through words alone. Psychodrama offers an embodied, interactive approach to help teens explore and resolvefeelings.
✓ Access emotions and experiences that are difficult to describe
✓ Gain insight into interpersonal patterns and family dynamics
✓ Explore alternative ways of relating and responding
✓ Resolve internal conflicts in a supportive group context
✓ Build self-confidence through role-based exploration
This approach helps bridge the gap between internal experience and external expression allowing healing to unfold through action, reflection, and group support.
At Portum, Psychodrama is grounded in trauma-informed care principles that prioritize safety, pacing, consent, and emotional empowerment. Teens are always guided by experienced clinicians with Psychodrama Therapy.

• Experiences are voluntary and respect each teen’s readiness
• Emotional triggers are handled with sensitivity and containment
• Meaningful expression is fostered, not forced
• Reflection and processing are integrated into enactment

Teens are invited to step into different roles including their own, another person’s, or a symbolic role to better understand thoughts, emotions, and relational dynamics. Role reversal allows adolescents to see situations from multiple perspectives, which can increase empathy, emotional insight, and self-awareness. This process often helps teens recognize patterns in communication, conflict, or emotional response that they may not have noticed before.
Psychodrama helps teens bring internal experiences outward in a tangible way. Feelings such as anger, fear, sadness, guilt, or confusion can be expressed through action rather than staying bottled up. By giving shape to these emotions, teens can explore them safely, reduce emotional pressure, and begin to understand where reactions are coming from without being judged or criticized.
Teens may reenact challenging situations they encounter in daily life, such as peer conflict, family tension, school stress, or moments of emotional overwhelm. These enactments are not about replaying trauma, but about exploring new ways of responding. With clinical guidance, teens can practice healthier communication, boundary-setting, or coping skills in a supportive environment before applying them in real life.
In group Psychodrama sessions, teens participate alongside peers who may be experiencing similar struggles. This shared environment reduces isolation and helps teens feel less alone in their experiences. Group members may support enactments by taking on roles, observing, or offering reflections by building empathy, social awareness, and a sense of belonging within the group.
After each enactment, clinicians guide teens through reflection and processing. This step helps teens connect what they experienced during the activity to their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors outside of therapy. Reflection transforms action into understanding, allowing teens to recognize patterns, identify strengths, and develop healthier ways of responding to stress or emotional challenges.
Psychodrama does not stand alone at Portum. Clinicians intentionally connect insights from Psychodrama to individual therapy, skills-based work (such as DBT or CBT), family sessions, and daily coping strategies. This integration ensures that emotional insights gained through action lead to practical change in relationships, self-regulation, and decision-making.
Psychodrama may be especially helpful for teens navigating:
• Anxiety and social discomfort
• Trauma responses and emotional suppression
• Mood dysregulation or identity struggles
• Interpersonal conflict or family tension
• Difficulty expressing emotions verbally
• Stagnant or avoidant coping patterns
This modality invites teens to engage emotionally, experientially, and interpersonally in ways that expand insight and strengthen coping.
Psychodrama helps teens move beyond talking about problems and into actively understanding and reshaping them. By engaging emotions, body awareness, and relationships together, teens gain deeper insight, increased confidence, and greater emotional flexibility. For many adolescents, this experiential approach unlocks growth that feels difficult to access through words alone.
At Portum Behavioral Health in Annandale, NJ, Psychodrama is delivered within a trauma-informed framework that prioritizes safety, choice, and empowerment helping teens explore who they are, how they relate to others, and how they want to move forward.
