We're Here To Help!

Yoga & Meditation Therapy combines mindful movement, breathwork, and guided meditation to help teens build emotional regulation, reduce stress, and strengthen mind–body connection.
Rooted in evidence-based practice and adapted for therapeutic settings, these interventions support adolescents in learning how to calm the nervous system and develop resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
At Portum Behavioral Health, Yoga & Meditation is offered as part of a trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate approach that meets teens where they are emotionally, physically, and cognitively while fostering safety, choice, and empowerment.
Adolescence is a time of rapid change, intense emotions, and pressure to perform academically, socially, and personally. Many teens experience stress, anxiety, disrupted sleep, mood swings, or difficulty focusing.

Unlike exercise for performance, therapeutic yoga and guided meditation are practiced with awareness, intention, and self-compassion by helping teens feel grounded and connected in the present moment.
At Portum, Yoga & Meditation Therapy is integrated into treatment with sensitivity to trauma histories and emotional safety. Clinicians recognize that touch, movement, or sensory experiences may feel vulnerable for some teens so practices are voluntary, non-judgmental, and paced for readiness. Teens are invited, not pushed, into mindful movement and breathwork.

Teens are guided in learning simple, effective breathing techniques that help calm the nervous system. Many adolescents experience stress as racing thoughts, tightness in the chest, irritability, or restlessness. Breathwork helps slow these responses, allowing teens to feel more grounded and in control. These techniques are practical and transferable, giving teens tools they can use during school stress, social anxiety, or moments of emotional intensity.
Yoga sessions incorporate gentle, accessible movements designed to help teens reconnect with their bodies in a safe and respectful way. Movement is always optional and adapted to each teen’s comfort level. Through mindful movement, teens learn to notice physical sensations, release tension, and build a sense of stability and confidence in their bodies, which is especially helpful for teens who feel disconnected, restless, or overwhelmed.
Through short, age-appropriate guided meditations, teens practice focusing attention and cultivating inner calm. These practices help reduce mental noise, improve focus, and create moments of rest in otherwise busy or stressful days. Visualization techniques may also be used to promote safety, relaxation, and emotional grounding, especially for teens experiencing anxiety or trauma-related symptoms.
Yoga & Meditation Therapy helps teens recognize the connection between emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations. Teens learn how stress shows up in their bodies and how mindful awareness can prevent emotional escalation. This growing awareness supports better emotional regulation, helping teens respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively when emotions run high.
As teens practice mindfulness and gentle movement, many begin to develop a more compassionate relationship with themselves. Yoga & Meditation encourage teens to notice experiences without judgment, reducing self-criticism and pressure. Over time, this fosters increased self-acceptance, confidence, and resilience skills that support both mental health and everyday life.
Yoga & Meditation Therapy does not stand alone at Portum Behavioral Health. Clinicians intentionally connect these practices to broader therapeutic goals, reinforcing skills learned in individual therapy, group work, or family sessions. Teens are supported in applying mindfulness and regulation strategies outside of sessions, helping these tools become part of daily life.
Therapeutic Yoga and Meditation can support adolescents experiencing:
• Stress, overwhelm, or academic pressure
• Anxiety or panic symptoms
• Difficulty sleeping or restlessness
• Mood fluctuations or emotional reactivity
• Somatic tension or body awareness challenges
• Trauma-related hyperarousal or avoidance
• Difficulty focusing or calm presence

For many teens, Yoga & Meditation Therapy provides a rare opportunity to slow down, tune in, and feel safe in their own bodies. At Portum, this work is always trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate, and paced with care.
