We're Here To Help!

Music Therapy is a clinically guided therapeutic approach that uses music and sound such as listening, creating, improvising, songwriting, and rhythmic activities to support emotional expression, regulation, and connection. Far beyond entertainment, Music Therapy is an evidence-based intervention that helps teens process feelings, reduce stress, improve communication, and strengthen coping skills.
At Portum Behavioral Health in Annadale, NJ, Music Therapy is delivered within a trauma-informed framework that meets adolescents where they are emotionally, developmentally, and socially and helps them build skills that support long-term well-being.
Adolescence is a time of powerful emotion, identity formation, and social change. Many teens find it difficult to articulate complex feelings with words alone. Music provides a non-judgmental, expressive outlet that resonates with young people in ways traditional talk therapy sometimes cannot.
✓ Express thoughts and feelings they may not yet have words for
✓ Process Trauma, Anxiety, and Stress through creative engagement
✓ Build emotional regulation and self-soothing skills
✓ Develop confidence, self-awareness, and communication
✓ Strengthen social connection in group settings
At Portum, Music Therapy is grounded in trauma-informed principles that prioritize safety, collaboration, and empowerment. Clinicians recognize that music can open emotional doors, so sessions are designed with intentional pacing and support. Teens are never forced to perform or share more than they are ready to share and participation is always voluntary and respectful.

• Respects emotional readiness and pacing
• Supports nervous system regulation through rhythmic engagement
• Encourages self-expression without pressure or judgment
• Uses structure and creativity to build coping skills
• Integrates music with other therapeutic approaches when appropriate

Many teens struggle to put their feelings into words, especially when emotions feel confusing, intense, or overwhelming. Music Therapy gives teens alternative ways to express what they’re experiencing internally through rhythm, melody, lyrics, or sound. Whether drumming, playing instruments, or engaging with music passively, teens are encouraged to explore emotions without pressure, judgment, or the need to “get it right.”
Songwriting offers teens a powerful way to reflect on identity, experiences, and emotions. With clinical guidance, teens may write original lyrics, adapt existing songs, or explore themes within music that resonate with their personal experiences. This process helps teens externalize thoughts, gain insight, and feel validated often leading to breakthroughs that feel safer and more accessible than direct conversation alone.
Clinicians may introduce specific music selections to support emotional awareness, grounding, or reflection. Teens learn how different sounds and rhythms affect mood, energy, and emotional state. This helps them build awareness of internal shifts and recognize how music can be used intentionally as a coping tool in everyday life.
Rhythm plays a powerful role in regulating the nervous system. Through structured rhythmic activities such as drumming or tempo-based exercises teens experience calming, grounding effects that help reduce anxiety, agitation, or emotional overload. These activities support body-based regulation and can be especially helpful for teens with trauma histories or difficulty calming themselves.
In group settings, Music Therapy fosters connection, cooperation, and shared expression. Teens engage together through music-based activities that encourage listening, turn-taking, and mutual respect. Group music experiences can reduce isolation, build social confidence, and help teens feel understood and supported by peers often strengthening engagement in treatment overall.
Music Therapy at Portum does not stand alone. Clinicians intentionally connect musical experiences to broader therapeutic goals, such as emotional regulation, communication, distress tolerance, and self-esteem. Insights gained through music are often carried into individual therapy, group discussions, or family work reinforcing growth across treatment settings.
Music Therapy can support adolescents and young adults facing:
• Anxiety, stress, or emotional overwhelm
• Trauma or PTSD symptoms
• Depression or low mood
• Difficulty expressing emotions

Music Therapy allows teens to access emotions safely, regulate stress, and build confidence in ways that feel natural and engaging. For many adolescents, music becomes a bridge by helping them connect to themselves, others, and the healing process in a way that feels authentic and empowering.
