We're Here To Help!

Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) are therapeutic practices that help adolescents learn how to intentionally pay attention to the present moment with openness and non-judgment.
Rooted in evidence-based psychology and supported by research across Stress, Anxiety, Trauma, and Mood Challenges, mindfulness practices give teens tools to notice thoughts and emotions with curiosity rather than avoidance.
At Portum Behavioral Health in Annandale, NJ, Mindfulness-Based Interventions are offered as part of a trauma-informed, adolescent-appropriate approach that supports emotional regulation, distress tolerance, self-awareness, and improved engagement in daily life.

Teens learn how to bring their attention to what is happening right now rather than getting caught in regrets about the past or worries about the future. This skill is especially helpful for adolescents who feel overwhelmed by racing thoughts, anxiety, or emotional overload. By grounding attention in the present moment, teens experience a greater sense of stability and focus, both emotionally and academically.
Many teens struggle with harsh self-criticism or feeling like something is “wrong” with them for having certain thoughts or emotions. Mindfulness teaches adolescents how to notice thoughts and feelings without labeling them as good or bad. This reduces shame, self-blame, and emotional escalation, helping teens feel more accepting of themselves while still working toward growth.
Through mindfulness, teens learn how to recognize emotions as they arise before they become overwhelming. Instead of reacting impulsively or shutting down, adolescents practice pausing, noticing, and choosing how to respond. Over time, this builds emotional regulation skills that help teens manage anger, anxiety, sadness, or frustration in healthier ways
Mindfulness practices activate the body’s natural calming response, helping reduce physical symptoms of stress such as tension, restlessness, racing heart, or shallow breathing. Teens learn techniques they can use in real-world situations before a test, during social stress, or in moments of conflict so as to feel more grounded and in control.
By training attention, mindfulness helps teens strengthen their ability to concentrate and stay engaged. This can be especially helpful for adolescents who struggle with distractibility, overwhelm, or mental fatigue. Improved focus supports academic performance, task completion, and confidence.
Mindfulness creates space between a thought or feeling and a reaction. In that space, teens learn they have choices. Rather than acting automatically out of fear, stress, or emotion, adolescents can pause and make decisions that align with their goals, values, and well-being. This skill supports healthier coping and reduces impulsive behaviors.
The skills teens learn through mindfulness extend far beyond therapy sessions.
